Won 2 – 0. Goals for: Cameron (47), Dicko pen. (61)
Team: Will, Joe, Brad, Matt, Tom; Cameron, Greg, Dicko, Jordan; Paul, Michael. Subs: Rob, James.
Thankfully, last week’s absentees all returned, although Ross and Richard were not able to make this week’s game. If the lads want to remain on top of the table, it’s games like this that need to be won. At start of play Biggleswade sat 3 points behind in genuine second place, having played the same number of matches as us.
On a glorious sunny morning at Biggleswade United’s ground we could sense a determination to do well and put last week’s careless draw at Baldock behind us. The first half was a tight and tense affair, with the two teams largely cancelling one another out. Our final pass was too often wayward and we were not using the width of the pitch enough.
A frank ‘exchange of views’ at half time seemed to immediately galvanise the team. Inside the first 3 minutes an excellent run and cross by Jordan reached Paul, whose shot was partially saved by the keeper, but broke along the goal line for Cameron to put away. Another good example of his knack of getting into the right place at the right time.
Our football improved, but still did not reach the level of some earlier performances. Credit must go to our opposition who competed every inch of the way. The clinching goal came just after the hour and shortly after Rob had been introduced for his debut. Matt made one of his trademark runs from the back and was only stopped by being brought down in the area for an obvious penalty. Dicko again calmly slammed the spot kick into the net. Shortly after going 2-0 up, it looked like we had added a third. This time Rob sent a great cross into Paul, who expertly controlled and then put away a lovely finish, only for the linesman to then put his flag up for offside!
This week we managed to see the game out well. James was introduced to add some fresh legs for Paul, who had ran his socks off. The pleasing part was that everyone had really put the effort in and tried to play good football when possible. This win was built on tremendous defending as a team as a whole and particularly by the back four and Will. Not many teams will shut out and keep a clean sheet against this Biggleswade team. We no longer give Man of the Match awards, but if we had done after this game it would have gone to our captain, Brad. He led the team with an awesome display of defending and finished with a “shredded” shirt to prove he’d been in a battle. Well done Brad; well done everyone!
That’s now 19 league points from a possible 21.
